There are many handymen who say they are licensed to work on your home but beware most only have a city business
license and not a California State Contractors license. This could cost you big money if something goes wrong. If a
handyman does not have a California State contractors license he can only do up to $500.00 work including materials
and labor. It's against the law to do work for more with-out a State license. If they get hurt on your property and your
insurance finds out they are unlicensed and are doing work above the $500.00 limit, your insurance will not pay if you get
sued. If something goes wrong and they burn your house down most do not have a liability insurance policy like a licensed
contractor has to carry, again your insurance may not pay ether. There are good handymen who are State licensed and
they have to show their license number on their websites and anything they advertise on including invoices and business
cards. You can check them out at www.cslb.ca.gov . If you think an unlicensed handyman is trying to contract above
$500.00 limit, contact the license board at the link above and report them. If something goes wrong with the work of a
unlicensed handyman you will have no recourse to sue them and the State can only ticket them. A licensed contractor goes
through extensive training in their fields and have to have a minimum of 4 years solid experience and than pass a State
contractors law test and trade test before they are licensed, they also pay for a bond to cover any bad work even if they go
bankrupted or out of business. Don't be fooled and risk your home or business. Hire only licensed California State
